VIK MUNIZ: REMASTERED
Through November 27, 2005
For the past 15 years,
Brazilian-born artist Vik Muniz has photographed his own illusory
drawings and sculptures and presented them in large-scale prints.
Muniz’s re-creations of famous images are made using
household items such as chocolate syrup, dust, thread, nails,
soil, or small, hole-punched pieces of magazine paper. The
resulting works are uncanny reproductions, very often from
Muniz’s memory, of well-known art historical and
photojournalistic images. The artist’s virtuosity and humor
imbue familiar paintings and pictures with a new character that
transforms their meaning due to his unusual methods.

NADIA HIRONAKA: THE LATE
SHOW
March 4 – May 14, 2006
|
In her latest video installation, The Late Show in
the Pennsylvania Academy’s Morris Gallery on view March 4
to May 14, 2006, Nadia Hironaka extends the cinematic experience
into the realm of the gallery environment. By synthesizing video
projection, single channel videos on monitors, and audio,
Hironaka entices the viewer to imagine characters leaving the
confines of the projected image and entering the real space of
the gallery. Using an abandoned drive-in movie theater as her
point of departure, Hironaka examines the convergence of
cinematic and real space, asking the viewer to reflect on how
mood and emotion are constructed within the context of film. The
installation is curated by Alex Baker, Curator of Contemporary
Art at the Academy.

PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMY IS FIRST STOP ON TOUR OF DEMUTH MUSEUM COLLECTION
September 22 - December 9, 2007
|
PHILADELPHIA
– Comprised of 34 works by Modernist and Pennsylvania Academy of the
Fine Arts alumnus Charles Demuth (1883-1935), Out of the Chateau: Works
from the Demuth Museum represents the first touring exhibition of the
permanent collection of the Demuth Museum in Lancaster, PA. Lancaster
provided Demuth with both artistic inspiration and personal refuge and
it was here, in his “chateau,” where the artist created the vast
majority of his works. Lancaster was also the counterpoint to Demuth’s
engagement with an international community of artists, through his
European tours and regular trips to New York and Provincetown. Curated
by Anne M. Lampe, Executive Director of the Demuth Museum and organized
at the Academy by Senior Curator Lynn Marsden-Atlass, the exhibition
will be on view in the Academy’s Historic Landmark Building from
