About the Academy Education Program (for students K-12)

We invite you to visit our newly expanded and renovated galleries and journey into a world of exciting images and ideas.

 

The Academy Visit Program provides an engaging, interactive learning experience for students of any grade level and is linked to National Standards.  Artworks in the galleries serve as windows through which students can study their world while gaining an understanding and appreciation for art and artists.  All tours are interactive and last for one hour.  Please call for more information and inquire about tour fees.

Ongoing Tours & Activities

Telling Tales - Art and Language Arts Tour

(Grades K-12)
Discover narrative paintings that tell stories taken from mythology, literature, American history, the imagination, and everyday life.

Students will:

  • Uncover stories within the paintings reflecting the artists' times.
  • Explore written, oral, and visual storytelling.
  • Study the visual symbols that artists use to convey a story or emotion.


Changing Visions of American Life - Art and American History

(Grades 2-12)

Travel through time to view American history from 1740-1860. View events, culture, and daily life, first hand, as represented by artists from various time periods. Some of the topics to be examined include Native Americans, colonial life, industrialization, and the Age of the Common Man.
Students will:

  • Experience sites, sounds and thoughts from the time period.
  • Discover artists' responses to major events as well as changing artistic styles and techniques.
  • Learn how events from yesterday influence us today.


The Art of Peace

(Grades 3-12)

This is a unique museum visit in which students will learn about creating peace in their home, school and community. Students participate in an interactive gallery tour viewing artworks in the museum galleries as well as Lost Dreams on Canvas, a portrait exhibit of children who were innocent victims of violence. Pre-visit teacher materials for The Art of Peace provide additional information and suggested activities to extend an anti-violence program into the school and classroom curriculum.

Annual Student Exhibition

(Grades 1-12)

May 13 - 30, 2008
Since 1902, Academy students have exhibited their paintings, sculptures, prints and mixed-media works in the galleries, competing for prizes and scholarships in the oldest and largest student fine arts exhibition in the country.
Students will:

  • Discover the exciting variety of styles, materials, and techniques on display.
  • Think critically about the art and form their own judgments about landscapes, still lifes, portraits, abstractions, and sculpture in the exhibition.
  • Examine how artists use different methods and media to express themselves.


Drawing Lessons in the Gallery

(Grades 2-12)

Trained artists lead students in drawing from works of art in the collection. Students learn the fundamentals of drawing, design and composition while creating their own work of art.


Teacher Events

Workshops for art and classroom teachers, grades K-12, help you to effectively prepare students for their visit. Through demonstrations, tours, group discussions, and hands-on activities, strategies are developed to integrate exhibition concepts into the art and general curriculum.

 


Teacher Services

Pre-Visit and Post-Visit Materials
The Academy sends interactive educational packets to teachers prior to their visit.  These materials provide an introduction to your tour, background on the artists and art on display and activities integrating tour concepts into the class curriculum.

 

Free Passes for Teachers
Teachers may obtain free passes to the Academy prior to their visit. Request your free pass when you schedule your tour.

 

Transportation Grant Program
A limited number of free buses are available for Philadelphia schools.  Please inquire when you schedule a tour.
