Art of Remarkable Women

This year, the Pennsylvania Academy began a yearlong celebration of the achievements of women in the arts, sciences, business, politics, and other arenas. In February, the commemoration kicked off with the exhibition
Cecilia Beaux, American Figure Painter.

    Young Friends Beer Tasting event highlighting the Woman’s Beer Organization
  • April 5 : Women in White
    An evening of art, food, wine, and white was enjoyed by all with celebrity chef, Susanna Foo; executive chef of Susanna Foo, Anne Coll; two of the region’s best sommeliers, Melissa Monosoff and Marnie Old; and pastry chef Lisa Huang from the Rittenhouse Hotel. Dinner was followed by a special tour of Cecilia Beaux’s exquisite portraits and La Grande Dame Champagne from sponsor Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin.

    Mariko Mori:Art In Search of an Enlightened Future
    Join Dr. Jonathan Wallis, Professor of Art History at Moore College of Art and Design, for a lunchtime discussion of contemporary, multimedia female artist, Mariko Mori. Her provocative artworks of pop culture, juxtaposing ancient Eastern ideas with cutting-edge technologies, articulate the individual’s identity in relation to the global culture and personal fantasies. More information on Art-at-Lunch.
  • April 18 : Alumni Art Auction
    6-9 p.m., School Gallery Gift of the Women's Board
    Join us for a celebratory evening featuring works by eight contemporary women artists and an opportunity to engage in this community’s conversations. Come and support women’s endeavors to express themselves and serve as artistic stewards.
  • May 8: Annual Student Exhibiton Women's Board Preview Party
  • May 9 : Edna Andrade, Recipient of Distinguished Alumni Award
    At this year's graduation ceremony, PAFA will present its Distinguished Alumni Award to artist Edna Andrade. Sadly, Ms. Andrade passed away on April 17, 2008, but the Academy will honor her illustrious career and immense contribution to the world of contemporary art at the ceremony on May 9.
  • May 22 : Women’s Board Cocktail Party
    The Women’s Board of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ will present their largest gift ever to the Academy - $350,000.
  • July 9 : Faith Ringgold Lecture
    In conjunction with the forthcoming exhibition, Reverberations: Modern and Contemporary Art from the Bank of America Collection (June 28 – September 21, 2008), African American artist, Faith Ringgold will discuss her artwork Ringgold’s story quilts and vividly illustrated books express a strong sense of community, illustrating the significance of race, gender, and family.

    Presented in conjunction with the Chance to Heal Foundation.
  • October 16 : USArtists Gala
    Sponsored by the Women’s Board of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Honorary Chair of the gala and show, Dodo Hamilton. 
  • October 17-20 : USArtists American Fine Art Show
    Sponsored by the Women’s Board of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, featuring works by remarkable women artists. 
  • November 15 : BACCHANAL! 2008
    At this pinnacle celebration for “The Art of Remarkable Women,” Bacchanal!, PAFA’s annual wine auction and dinner will honor women chefs and wine makers. For information on this fun and fabulous evening, please contact 215-972-2037.

The Art of Remarkable Women Committee
