Announcing the Academy BFA
The School is pleased to announce that the Academy Bachelors of Fine Arts (BFA), our first undergraduate degree program, has been approved by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).  The Academy BFA is now available to former Academy Certificate students and alumni who were enrolled within the last 10 years (after January 1998).  The Academy BFA is being offered IN ADDITION TO the Certificate and the Penn BFA programs.

The Academy BFA is an all-Academy degree program that includes both studio and liberal art courses.  Over the next 4 years, the Academy will roll out a full complement of liberal art courses, starting with new liberal arts classes Fall 2008.  The Academy BFA, therefore, will also be accepting liberal arts transfer credits.

This is an exciting new opportunity for many Academy alumni.  For additional information on the application process, please feel free to contact the Office of Admissions at admissions@pafa.edu or at 215-972-7625.

Lost Dreams on Canvas
Lost Dreams on Canvas is a portrait exhibition of children who were innocent victims of violence. As you know, far too many of our children are being lost to violence on the streets of Philadelphia. This exhibition of over 300 portraits remembers these young children, their lives, hopes and dreams, while giving a face to the senseless violence taking over the streets. The portraits are presented to the surviving family members and a reproduction is made to become part of the Lost Dreams on Canvas exhibition that travels around to schools and many other sites as an effective centerpiece for anti-violence programming.

This program depends on artists who volunteer their time and talent to this worthwhile program.  Please call Judy Ringold at 215-972-2061 to learn more about this program and to volunteer to paint a portrait.

Philadelphia Sculptors
Philadelphia Sculptors is offering a great opportunity for artists interested in making artistic statements about environmental issues.  In conjunction with a major exhibition on global warming to be held at the Icebox Gallery at the Crane Arts Building in Philadelphia, we are sponsoring a competition for college students on the same theme. Students presently enrolled, and 2007 and 2008 graduates of Moore College of Art and Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Tyler School of Art, The University of the Arts, and the University of Pennsylvania are eligible to apply.

We are seeking submissions of original 2D and 3D work in any media.  The artwork must address the theme of climate change, but artists may expand their areas of inquiry to include sociological, psychological, political, philosophical, cultural, economic, and medical concerns, as well as scientific ones. Artworks which suggest ways of positively transforming the environment or providing creative solutions to any of the problems created by global warming are especially encouraged.

The show will run from September 30 - October 18, 2008, and all work must be submitted digitally.  A "Best in Show" cash prize will be awarded.  Jurors for the exhibition will be Margery Amdur, Professor of Art at Rutgers University, and Warren Angle, Exhibitions Curator at the Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia.  For more information contact Lauren Hallden-Abberton at laurenhallden@gmail.com or Darla Jackson at alfalfalovesme@gmail.com, or visit www.philasculptors.org/globalwarming.
