A noted consultant to educational
institutions for the past ten years, Dr. Lewis first gained national
prominence as President of St. Mary’s College of
Maryland—one of only two honors colleges in the country. From
1983 to 1996, Lewis led the college’s transformation from a
typical public institution into one of the finest liberal arts colleges
in the country, independent but state assisted. Under his
leadership, St. Mary’s was ranked by U.S. News & World Report
as the best buy of all public colleges and by Time and Money magazines
as one of the top ten best buys of all colleges and universities in the
United States. Prior to assuming the presidency of St. Mary’s College, Lewis was associate dean of Cornell University’s Graduate School of Business where he developed and oversaw the School’s well-known writing program and played a major role in strategic planning and external relations. A native of Rhode Island, Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree from Union College. He holds a master’s degree from Boston University where he was a teaching fellow, and received a doctorate from the University of Denver. He has published numerous articles and poems in newspapers, magazines, and journals, and has been awarded honorary doctorates from Washington College and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. |
