Description:
Self-portraits of artists and portraits of artists by their friends are among the most intimate and personal artworks. Unlike formal portraits that often portray only the surface of the individual, these insightful works can create a window into the temperaments and characters of the artists. Self-portraits are done for a variety of reasons: study, documentation of changing moods and styles, symbolism, commemoration of life stages and events and for emotional release. Sometimes they are done simply because the model is available and free.
Portraits of colleagues reflect the complex web of relationships between artists as respected teachers, friends, their artistic influences and the tradition of exchanging portraits between comrades. Displayed here are artworks by Academy faculty, alums and members of the family of Philadelphia artists, past and present.
