Seeks to Redefine "Regionalism" in Contemporary Art PHILADELPHIA — On view October 22 through December 31, 2011, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) presents *here.*, an exhibition that considers how “place” is not simply the geographic locality where an artist lives and works but also the subject matter of lived experience. Recognizing how place influences and infiltrates each artist’s work in diverse and complicated ways, here. explores how a sense of place exists in the work of artists from six particular regions — Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Phoenix/Scottsdale, Raleigh-Durham, Detroit and Kansas City. This group exhibition features works by Alton Bowman, Philip Cohn, Mary Beth Clark, Kevin Broad, Paul Metrinko, John Pacer, Andrea Packard, Ben Pines, Sunny Ra, Judith Thomas, Elizabeth Wilson, and Julie Zahn. After Tanner: African-American Artists Since 1940 Henry Ossawa Tanner was a mentor and role model for younger artists during his lifetime and has been a source of pride for many generations of artists since his death. This installation, drawn largely from PAFA’s collection and supplemented by several major loans, broadly celebrates what Tanner’s career inspired and made possible in its wake.

Hennessy Youngman & Nathaniel Snerpus Present: The Grand Manner November 5, 2011 – February 5, 2012 The Morris Gallery Program continues with Philadelphia based artist Jayson Musson’s presentation of a critical intervention by Hennessy Youngman, Nathaniel Snerpus, and Jameson Ernst—assumed alter-egos created by Musson.

Bill Viola: Ocean Without a Shore Ongoing Ocean Without a Shore, a recent PAFA acquisition, is a major video installation and a profound experiential work that combines a reverence for the traditions of figuration and realism in Western art with new and cutting edge technology
