PAFA Hosts PAFA in Bloom, April 4–6

National Floral Designers Transform Historic Landmark Building
With Over 60 Blooming Masterpieces

Preview Reception: April 3, 5:30-9:00 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA (January 23, 2014) – The galleries of PAFA’s Historic Landmark Building will burst into bloom this April during the inaugural installment of PAFA in Bloom, April 4-6, 2014.

PAFA is partnering with Schaffer Designs’ Bill Schaffer and Kristine Kratt, highly regarded national floral designers, as well as 15 garden clubs and 45 national floral designers to create a three-day showcase of more than 60 exquisite floral masterpieces interpreting art masterpieces from PAFA’s renowned collection and rarely seen Cast Hall.

PAFA in Bloom is the only event of its kind featuring national and international floral designers, including participants from the United Kingdom, Canada, as well as California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Internationally-acclaimed British floral designers Neil Whittaker and Wendy Andrade will host feature floral presentations and workshops, providing an exciting international element to PAFA in Bloom. Neil Whittaker has studied all over the world, gaining his National Diploma of Floristry (NDSF) in 1998, and his American Institute of Floral Design (AIFD) qualification in 2000. Whittaker is a seasoned competitor and was named the U.K. and Ireland’s Interflora Florist of the Year in 2011 and 2013. He also won the Croatian National Championship in 2010.

Wendy Andrade is recognized in the U.K. and internationally as one of the industry's shining talents. Her floral designs have been featured at various significant sites in the U.K., including The Houses of Parliament, The Lord Mayor’s Show and Hampton Court. Having gained the AIFD qualification in 2008, Andrade was invited to create floral installations for the Academy Awards in 2010.

“We are thrilled to introduce this new event to PAFA and Philadelphia. Sixty original floral designs will excite the senses and complement the rich beauty of the Frank Furness and George Hewitt-designed Historic Landmark Building and PAFA’s extraordinary collection of American art,” says David Brigham, PAFA President and CEO.

PAFA in Bloom will begin with a Preview Reception on Thursday, April 3, 5:30-9:00 p.m., with tickets ranging from $100 for Young Friends; $350 for Patrons; and $500 for Benefactors. The floral art installations will remain on view to the public from Friday, April 4 through Sunday, April 6.

To enrich the visitor experience, PAFA is offering a variety of related programs and workshops led by internationally-recognized floral designers and artists for adults, children, and families throughout the weekend. Please see list of related programming below.
