  • PAFA Faculty Exhibition Showcases Drawings by Philadelphia Sculptors

    PHILADELPHIA – Drawn to Sculpture is an exhibition of drawings by PAFA sculpture faculty members on view from January 28 to April 15 in the School of Fine Arts /Gift of the Women’s Board Gallery in the Hamilton Building at the Pennsylvania School of the Fine Arts (PAFA).

  • Exciting Programs and Performances at PAFA to Accompany Groundbreaking Exhibition Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit

    PHILADELPHIA – The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is proud to present a schedule of special programs, performances, family art activities, and workshops in conjunction with the exhibition Henry Ossawa Tanner: Modern Spirit, on view January 28 – April 15. In addition, Sunday admission to the exhibition and programs will be free during the run of the exhibition. A wine bar and food with a French flare will accompany extended Wednesday hours.

  • PAFA Presents PAFA and Dr. Barnes

    PHILADELPHIA – In celebration of the debut of the Barnes Foundation in its new home on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) presents PAFA and Dr. Barnes, on view April 7 through July 8, exploring the connections between the Pennsylvania Academy and Dr. Albert Barnes. This exhibition will feature works from the permanent collection that relate to Barnes’s tastes and philosophy, as well as works by his friends (such as William J. Glackens), and items from the PAFA Archives.

  • PAFA Introduces Fine Arts Illustration and Contemporary Realism Programs

    Two new specializations added to the nation’s foremost undergraduate studio art program

    PHILADELPHIA – The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is proud to announce the addition of two new interdisciplinary specializations of Contemporary Realism and Fine Arts Illustration as part of its existing majors in painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture. Starting in the fall of 2012, the new programs will encourage cross disciplinary study and the acquisition of professional expertise in realist representational artmaking techniques and in fine arts illustration.
     

  • PAFA Acquires Ocean Without A Shore Video Installation by Bill Viola

    PHILADELPHIA – The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is proud to announce the presentation of Ocean Without a Shore (2007), a major video installation by internationally acclaimed artist Bill Viola and a significant new addition to the museum’s collection. Exhibited in the United States for the first time, this profound and moving work of art can be experienced at PAFA from November 19 onward.

  • PAFA Celebrates the Art of the Vine at Bacchanal 2011 on November 12

    PHILADELPHIA – For the thirteenth consecutive year, on November 12, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) will host Bacchanal 2011, The Art of the Vine. Consistently recognized as the premier wine and auction event in the region, Bacchanal was cited in 2010 by Haute Living Magazine as one of the "Five Best Galas in Philadelphia."

  • PAFA's Fall Exhibition "here." Seeks to Redefine "Regionalism" in Contemporary Art

    PHILADELPHIA — On view October 22 through December 31, 2011, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA)  presents here., an exhibition that considers how “place” is not simply the geographic locality where an artist lives and works but also the subject matter of lived experience. Recognizing how place influences and infiltrates each artist’s work in diverse and complicated ways, here. explores how a sense of place exists in the work of artists from six particular regions — Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Phoenix/Scottsdale, Raleigh-Durham, Detroit and Kansas City.

  • 51-ft Paint Torch Installed at New Civic Space at PAFA

    Sculpture by world-renowned artist Claes Oldenburg ushering in new era of cultural engagement in the region


    PHILADELPHIA — On August 20, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) witnessed a milestone in the history of this institution, the nation’s first museum and school of the fine arts, when Paint Torch, a sculpture by internationally renowned artist Claes Oldenburg was installed. This new public artwork, a site-specific sculpture commissioned by PAFA for Lenfest Plaza, makes Philadelphia home to four large-scale public works by the artist – more than any other city in the world. Paint Torch marks Oldenburg’s first large-scale work to incorporate light sources.

  • PAFA Welcomes New Board of Trustee Members

    PHILADELPHIA – After a successful 15-year term, Donald R. Caldwell has stepped down as Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). He was succeeded by PAFA Vice-Chair and Treasurer Kevin F. Donohoe, who assumed the chairmanship on July 1, 2011. As Emeritus Chair, Mr. Caldwell remains an active member of the Board.
