Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) seeks candidates and nominations of potential candidates for the position of Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid. This positions reports to the President and CEO and is responsible for all admissions, recruiting, and financial aid efforts of the school of fine arts.

Founded in 1805, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is the nation's first school of fine art. PAFA has both undergraduate and graduate degree and certificate programs. The long-established, 120-credit, four-year Certificate is a studio art making program with majors in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, and Printmaking. The PAFA BFA provides concentrations in the four studio disciplines and a rigorous program of liberal arts studies. PAFA also offers a BFA in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania. The large and vigorous graduate programs include a one-year Post-Baccalaureate Certificate and a two-year, 60-credit MFA.

PAFA has a large and extraordinary faculty of 67 members. Working artists as well as committed teachers, members of the faculty actively exhibit their work, earn commissions, and in the last year won such prestigious awards as the Guggenheim Fellowship and Fulbright Fellowship. PAFA is an extraordinary teaching and learning environment, offering an impressive combination of exhibitions, lectures, visiting artist programs, and events. Combined with the rich cultural life of Philadelphia, these co-curricular programs offer impressive advantages to its fine arts students. PAFA's students benefit from its world-class museum of American art, which has both an outstanding historical collection and an active exhibition program of contemporary art.

The highlight of the academic year is the Annual Student Exhibition. In 2011 this event was attended by more than 11,000 visitors; produced more than $300,000 in sales; and resulted in more than 160 scholarships and prizes including the prestigious travel awards.

Slightly more than half of PAFA's students are women and about 30% are students of color. PAFA supports merit as well as economic and ethnic diversity through generous scholarship support. This year, more than $3.2 million was awarded to approximately 350 full-time students.

The Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid leads the development and execution of recruitment and financial aid strategies for the undergraduate and graduate programs. The Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid leads a team of four full-time Admissions and Financial Aid staff plus three seasonal/alumni recruiters. This position is a member of the Senior Staff management team and participates in meetings of the Board of Trustees. The Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid participates in short- and long-term institutional planning. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Dean of the School of Fine Arts, Dean of Student Affairs, Faculty, Director of Continuing Education, and Executive Vice President of Marketing and Communication.

Candidates must have management experience with at least seven years of experience developing, implementing, and managing successful academic recruitment and marketing strategies, and overseeing financial aid. This position requires a highly collaborative leader who is skilled at planning and setting long term strategic goals as well as leading the achievement of short term objectives. She/he works cooperatively with staff, administration, and faculty to achieve objectives. A bachelor's degree is required. A background in fine arts is favored.

Paintings Conservator

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA), founded in 1805, is the nation’s first museum and school of fine art. PAFA seeks a Paintings Conservator responsible for performing and managing the conservation/restoration activities of the Museum’s permanent collection as well as certain pieces on loan. The conservator examines, documents, evaluates, surveys, and identifies objects to be treated from the permanent collection.  Working closely with the Senior Curator to prioritize conservation work; the conservator creates treatment proposals, estimates time and cost of treatment, and performs necessary treatments.  The conservator writes incoming and outgoing condition reports, working closely with the Senior Registrar and the Chief Preparator. The conservator conserves  objects in accordance with best practices in the current state of the field, maintains appropriate standards for conservation practices, keeping up to date with the latest conservation techniques and practices, through research and training, and maintains full conservation records  for permanent collection objects; studies the treatment histories of permanent collection objects; and produces a visual record of the object and treatment stages (as necessary) for institutional records. In addition this person participates in strategic planning, emergency preparedness, special exhibitions planning and other museum-wide activities as assigned by the Senior Curator, administers the conservation budget, orders technical and equipment, literature and supplies for the department. In coordination with the Development department, creates grant applications for acquisitions of equipment, funding of conservation projects and providing stipends for graduate interns. Also hosts laboratory or site tours for school groups and other visitors delivering talks and presentations to amateur and professional audiences.

Candidates must hold a Masters degree from a recognized conservation training center and a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Art history, or Chemistry.  Must have five (5) years postgraduate conservation experience, including three (3) years minimum frame conservation experience, a history of published research.  Candidates must possess excellent writing and communication skills, appropriate computer skills, analytical thinking and familiarity with disaster prevention and recovery.  Due to the physical nature of the position, candidates must be able to sit, stand, or bend for long periods of time. The ability to lift and move objects up to 40 lbs. is required.
